I had the pleasure of seeing J-1 play drums while he was on tour with Computer Jay and DâM-FunK as Master Blazter. I was so impressed, I made sure I caught the consecutive show in Toronto the night after the show in my hometown, Steel City.
I was instantly charmed and enamoured by J-1’s incredibly warm energy, insane talent and magnetic smile—to me this dude was the epitome of true artistry. I was struck with sadness when I learned of his untimely death a few short weeks after meeting him. It was a tragedy to lose such a lovely soul too soon.
The beat for “Sunny” originally appeared on J-1’s mixtape, FRSH SLCTS PRESENTS: J-1 “ATTACK OF THE DEER”. I use it here in tribute. Though I only met Jovan Coleman briefly, I was inspired by him. May his memory continue to live on.
